If you are budgeting for an Ayurvedic massage in Ontario, two questions matter: what affects the price, and will insurance help? Here is a clear, honest answer.
Is Ayurvedic massage covered by insurance?
No. Ayurvedic massage (Abhyanga) is a traditional wellness service and is not eligible for reimbursement under Ontario extended health plans. This is different from Registered Massage Therapy, which is insurance-eligible when provided by a therapist registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). We will always tell you upfront which of your services can be claimed.
What affects the cost
- Length of session — Abhyanga is unhurried; longer sessions cost more.
- Treatment type — a simple Abhyanga differs from Shirodhara or a targeted Kati Basti, and a multi-day Panchakarma program is priced differently again.
- Oils and preparation — authentic warm, herb-infused oils are central to the treatment.
- Practitioner training — genuine Ayurvedic care from a trained practitioner differs from a spa add-on.
How to think about value
Because it is not insurance-covered, an Ayurvedic massage is an out-of-pocket wellness choice — best understood as a traditional treatment for stress, sleep and whole-body balance rather than a billable clinical service. If insurance coverage is your priority, Registered Massage Therapy with direct billing is the option to start with; if you want the authentic experience, Abhyanga is worth it on its own terms.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ayurvedic massage covered by insurance in Ontario?
No — it is a wellness service and is not insurance-eligible. Registered Massage Therapy provided by a CMTO-registered therapist is the insurance-eligible alternative with direct billing.
Why is Registered Massage Therapy covered but Ayurveda isn't?
RMT is a regulated health profession in Ontario, so extended health plans reimburse it. Ayurveda is a traditional wellness practice outside that regulatory framework, so plans do not cover it.
