Pregnancy Massage by Trimester: What's Safe and When — Aara Holistic Wellness Clinic, Scarborough

Prenatal massage is generally considered safe throughout an uncomplicated pregnancy when performed by a trained therapist, with positioning and technique adapted each trimester. Always clear it with your care provider, especially in the first trimester or a high-risk pregnancy.

First trimester

Many providers are cautious early on. Some therapists prefer to wait until after the first trimester; check with your provider. Gentle relaxation work may be appropriate.

Second trimester

Often the most comfortable window for prenatal massage, using side-lying positioning to ease back, hip and shoulder tension.

Third trimester

Side-lying with supportive cushioning, focusing on the low back, hips and legs, and comfort as the body changes.

Always clear it first

Tell your therapist you're pregnant and how far along, and confirm with your midwife or physician — essential in a high-risk pregnancy. Prenatal massage by an RMT is insurance-eligible.
