What to Expect at Your First Massage Appointment
If you've never had a professional massage, a little uncertainty is completely normal. Knowing what to expect makes it easy to relax and get the most from your visit. Here's how a first Registered Massage Therapy appointment usually goes.
Before your session
You'll complete a brief health history and chat with your therapist about your goals — whether that's easing a tight neck, recovering from activity, or simply unwinding. This shapes the whole treatment.
During the massage
- Your therapist steps out while you get comfortable on the table under a sheet or blanket.
- Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time — your comfort and privacy come first.
- You control the pressure. Speak up any time if you'd like more or less.
- There's no "right" way to be — talk or stay quiet, whatever helps you relax.
After your session
It's normal to feel relaxed, a little sleepy, or occasionally mildly sore the next day — similar to after exercise. Drinking water and taking it easy helps.
A few tips
Arrive a few minutes early, avoid a heavy meal right before, and mention anything relevant — injuries, pregnancy, sensitivities — so the session is tailored to you.
Come as you are
You don't need to know what to ask for. Just share your goal and let your therapist build the session around it.
