Understanding Your Dosha: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Explained
Everything in Ayurveda begins with the three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These are the functional energies that Ayurveda uses to describe how each person's body and mind operate. Understanding your unique balance is the foundation of every personalised treatment plan.
Vata — movement
Vata governs movement: breathing, circulation, the nervous system, and the passage of thoughts and impulses. When balanced, Vata brings creativity and vitality. In excess, it is associated with dryness, restlessness, anxiety, irregular digestion, and stiffness in the joints.
Pitta — transformation
Pitta governs transformation: digestion, metabolism, body temperature, and the sharpness of the intellect. Balanced Pitta supports strong digestion and focus. In excess, it is linked with heat, acidity, skin flare-ups, irritability, and inflammation.
Kapha — structure
Kapha governs structure and lubrication: the tissues, stability, immunity, and calm. Balanced Kapha brings steadiness and endurance. In excess, it is associated with heaviness, congestion, sluggish digestion, and a feeling of stagnation.
Why your constitution matters
Each person is born with a natural blend of the three (your prakriti), and daily life, diet, season, and stress shift that balance over time (your vikriti). Ayurvedic treatment isn't one-size-fits-all — the oils, therapies, diet, and pace are all chosen to bring your current state back toward your natural balance.
Finding your balance
This is why a good Ayurvedic plan always starts with assessment rather than a fixed menu. A practitioner considers your constitution, your current imbalance, and your health history before recommending therapies such as Abhyanga, Shirodhara, or a full Panchakarma programme.
