Ayurveda for Osteoarthritis and Joint Pain (Sandhivata)
Osteoarthritis — the gradual wear of the joints that brings stiffness and pain — is described in Ayurveda as Sandhivata, literally "Vata in the joints." Because Vata governs dryness and degeneration, this framing points the supportive approach toward warmth, lubrication, and nourishment.
Why warmth and oil
If dryness and Vata are at the root, then the natural counter is warm, oily, nourishing therapy. This is why oil-based treatments feature so prominently in Ayurvedic support for joint concerns, in contrast to the digestion-first approach used for inflammatory Amavata.
Targeted therapies
- Kati Basti / Janu Basti: a reservoir of warm medicated oil held over the low back or knee to soothe a specific joint;
- Abhyanga: full-body warm oil massage to ease overall stiffness;
- Swedana: herbal steam to relax muscles around the joint;
- Basti: medicated enema therapy, given its central role for Vata, when appropriate.
Diet and daily life
Warm, nourishing, easily digested food; staying hydrated; gentle regular movement to keep joints mobile; and avoiding excessive cold and strain — all support the joints from within. Overexertion and cold, dry conditions tend to aggravate Vata.
Realistic expectations
Ayurvedic therapies aim to support comfort, mobility, and quality of life; they are not a substitute for medical assessment of joint damage. Anyone with significant or worsening joint problems should be evaluated by their physician, and Ayurvedic care used as a complement.
