Swedana: Herbal Steam and Vaporization Therapy in Ayurveda

Panchakarma · 5 min read · Updated 2026-07-24

Swedana is the Ayurvedic therapy of therapeutic sweating, produced with herbal steam or vaporization. It almost always follows Abhyanga oil massage, and together the two form the core of Panchakarma's preparatory phase.

Why warmth and steam

Ayurveda teaches that heat opens the body's channels (srotas) and liquefies accumulated matter so it can move and be cleared. After oil has been applied and worked into the tissues by Abhyanga, Swedana's warmth helps carry that mobilised matter toward the digestive tract, where the main Panchakarma actions can remove it.

How Swedana is given

The person is usually seated or lying in a steam chamber or under localised vaporization, with the head kept cool and comfortable. Herbal decoctions are often added to the steam so their properties are delivered along with the warmth. The intensity and duration are tailored to the individual.

What it may support

Comfort and cautions

Swedana is warming by design, so it is moderated carefully and is generally avoided or adjusted in certain conditions and life stages. As always, a short assessment ensures it's suitable and comfortable for you.

Rarely alone, often essential

Swedana is seldom the whole treatment — its role is to amplify oil therapy and set up the deeper cleansing actions. At Aara it is delivered as part of a coordinated Ayurvedic process designed around your needs.
