Basti in Ayurveda: Anuvasana vs. Asthapana Medicated Enema
Among Panchakarma's five actions, Basti — medicated enema — is often regarded as the most versatile and important, particularly for balancing Vata, the dosha governing movement, the nervous system, and the joints. Aara offers Basti in its two classical forms: Anuvasana and Asthapana.
Why Vata is central
Vata imbalance is associated in Ayurveda with dryness, stiffness, irregular digestion, restlessness, and many disorders of the nerves, bones, and muscles. Because the colon is considered the primary seat of Vata, therapies delivered there are seen as an especially direct way to address these patterns.
Anuvasana Basti (medicated oil enema)
Anuvasana uses medicated oils. It is generally gentler, nourishing, and lubricating in nature, and is traditionally used to counter dryness and support the tissues. It is often given in combination with the decoction form as part of a structured sequence.
Asthapana Basti (medicated decoction enema)
Asthapana — also called Niruha — uses a medicated herbal decoction, sometimes combined with oils, honey, salt, and herbal pastes. It is considered the more actively cleansing of the two and is used to clear accumulated waste while still respecting the body's balance.
How they work together
In classical practice, Anuvasana and Asthapana are frequently alternated in a set rhythm over a course of days, so that the cleansing action of the decoction is balanced by the nourishing action of the oil. The exact schedule is chosen by the practitioner for each person.
What Basti may support
Basti is traditionally associated with support for Vata-related concerns such as joint and back discomfort, stiffness, and certain neuromuscular patterns — always within an individualised plan and alongside your regular medical care.
Assessed and tailored
Basti is a clinical therapy that requires proper assessment and preparation. At Aara it is offered as part of a complete Panchakarma process, designed around your constitution. A consultation is the place to start.
