Nasya (Nasal Administration): Ayurvedic Therapy for the Head and Sinuses

Panchakarma · 5 min read · Updated 2026-07-24

Nasya is the Panchakarma action in which medicated oils or preparations are administered through the nostrils. Ayurveda considers the nose the gateway to the head, so Nasya is the therapy of choice for concerns above the shoulders — the sinuses, head, and mind.

The idea behind Nasya

Because the nasal passages connect directly to the head region, applying medicated oils there is seen as a direct route to nourish and cleanse that area. Nasya is typically preceded by gentle facial and neck warming and massage to relax the tissues and open the passages.

What Nasya is traditionally used for

How a session unfolds

A typical Nasya begins with warmth and light massage of the face, forehead, and neck. The practitioner then administers a measured amount of the appropriate medicated oil into each nostril, followed by a short rest. The preparation used is selected for the individual's constitution and concern.

Gentle but specific

Though Nasya is one of the gentler Panchakarma actions, it is still a therapeutic procedure with its own indications and cautions. It is generally avoided in certain situations, so a brief assessment always comes first.

Part of a complete process

At Aara, Nasya may be offered on its own or woven into a full Panchakarma programme, depending on your needs. If persistent congestion, head tension, or sleep concerns are on your mind, a consultation is a good first step.
