How acupuncture works
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is based on the idea that health depends on the smooth flow of energy, called qi, along pathways in the body. Fine needles placed at specific points are used to support that flow. From a modern perspective, needling stimulates nerves, muscle and connective tissue, which may influence pain signals and the body's relaxation response. Research suggests acupuncture may help some people with chronic pain and headaches, though results vary from person to person.
What to expect at your first acupuncture visit
- A conversation first. Your practitioner asks about your symptoms, health history, sleep, stress and goals.
- Gentle needling. Needles are extremely thin. Most people feel a small pinch or nothing at all.
- Rest time. You relax with the needles in place for about 20 to 30 minutes, and many people feel calm or sleepy.
- A plan. Your practitioner suggests how many visits are realistic for your situation.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and have a light meal beforehand. Tell your practitioner if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a pacemaker or have a bleeding disorder.
What people commonly see us for
Stress and anxiety, trouble sleeping, neck and back pain, tension headaches and migraines, joint pain, and women's health concerns. Acupuncture can sit alongside massage therapy, cupping or Ayurvedic care, and we are happy to coordinate with your physician.
