What to expect at your first appointment
- A conversation. Your therapist asks where you hold tension, what you want from the session and any health conditions.
- Assessment. A short look at posture and movement so treatment is targeted.
- Treatment. You are draped and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Pressure is adjusted throughout, so tell us if you want more or less.
- A plan. Simple aftercare and a realistic schedule, not an open-ended commitment.

Insurance, receipts and direct billing
Registered Massage Therapy is covered by many extended health plans when provided by a CMTO-registered therapist. OHIP does not generally cover it. Direct billing is available for eligible services: we submit the claim and you pay only what your plan does not cover. Have your plan details ready and read how direct billing works, or text us and we will confirm what is possible.

Frequently asked questions
Is massage therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?
Many extended health plans in Ontario cover Registered Massage Therapy when it is provided by a therapist registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). OHIP does not generally cover it. Check your plan's annual maximum, then call or text 647-622-4114 to ask about direct billing.
Does Aara direct bill my insurance?
Direct billing is available for eligible services. Whether your insurer supports it depends on your plan, so call or text us with your plan details before you book and we will tell you what is possible.
Do I need a doctor's referral for massage in Ontario?
No referral is needed to see an RMT in Ontario. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's note, so check yours. If your pain followed a serious injury or comes with numbness, weakness or fever, see a physician first.
What is the difference between an RMT and a massage therapist?
In Ontario, "Registered Massage Therapist" (RMT) is a protected title for therapists registered with the CMTO. Receipts from an RMT are what most extended health plans accept.
What types of massage do you offer?
Deep tissue, relaxation, sports, prenatal and postpartum massage, plus cupping, myofascial release and trigger point therapy. We also offer Ayurvedic massage.
Does deep tissue massage hurt?
It should feel firm and focused, not painful. Tell your therapist at any point and they will adjust the pressure. Mild soreness for a day or so afterwards is common.
How often should I get a massage?
It depends on your goals. For general stress and tension, monthly is popular. For a specific issue, more frequent sessions early on often help. Your therapist will suggest a realistic plan after your first assessment.
