- Clinic in Scarborough, Ontario
In Ontario, only people registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) can use the titles Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) or Massage Therapist. Many extended health plans cover Registered Massage Therapy, OHIP does not generally cover it, and you can check any therapist on the CMTO's public register. Aara Holistic Wellness Clinic offers Registered Massage Therapy in Scarborough.
What is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Ontario?
An RMT is a regulated health professional. In Ontario, the titles Massage Therapist (MT) and Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) are protected, which means only people registered with the CMTO may use them. Registration means the therapist meets the college's standards and can be held to account if there is a complaint. See how to check a practitioner is registered.
Types of massage therapy
- Deep tissue massage: firm, focused work for chronic tension.
- Relaxation massage: lighter pressure for stress and sleep.
- Sports massage: training, recovery and active people.
- Prenatal and postpartum massage: comfort before and after birth.
- Myofascial release and trigger point therapy: for stubborn restrictions and referred pain.
- Cupping: an add-on for tight muscles. See cupping vs massage.

What massage therapy can help with
People commonly see an RMT for muscle tension, neck and shoulder tightness from desk work, low back discomfort, stress, headaches that come with muscle tension, and recovery from activity. Massage is one of the non-drug options that guidelines list for recent low back pain. See what the evidence says about massage for low back pain. It does not cure disease, and some conditions need medical care first.
Insurance, direct billing and OHIP
OHIP does not generally cover massage therapy. Many extended health plans (often through an employer) cover Registered Massage Therapy when it is provided by a CMTO-registered therapist, up to an annual maximum. Direct billing means the clinic submits the claim to your insurer so you only pay what your plan does not cover, where your insurer supports it. Check your plan's annual maximum, any per-visit cap, and whether it needs a doctor's note. Aara offers direct billing for eligible services; read how it works and whether massage is covered by insurance in Ontario.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to see an RMT in Ontario. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's note, so check yours. Seek medical care first if your pain follows a serious injury or comes with numbness, weakness, fever, loss of bladder or bowel control, or chest pain.
What to expect at your first appointment
- A conversation about your health, where you hold tension and what you want from the session.
- A short assessment of posture and movement.
- Treatment with draping, and pressure adjusted to you at every point.
- A plan with simple aftercare and a realistic schedule.

How to choose an RMT in Ontario
- Confirm registration with the CMTO's Find an RMT tool.
- Ask about receipts and direct billing so your insurer accepts them.
- Ask whether the therapist has experience with your concern.
- Expect clear communication and consent at every step.
- Be cautious about long prepaid packages before you have seen any benefit.
