Gua sha in Scarborough at Aara is a traditional technique in which a smooth-edged tool is stroked over lubricated skin to ease muscle tension, offered as part of our Chinese-medicine-based care.
What gua sha is
Gua sha comes from traditional Chinese medicine. A smooth tool is glided over oiled skin, usually on the back, neck and shoulders, to ease tightness. A gentler facial version is also popular for facial wellness.
What to expect
Pressure is firm but should stay tolerable. The skin can turn pink or red, with small reddish dots that usually fade in a few days. Keep the area warm and covered afterward and avoid heavy exercise for the rest of the day. Research is limited, and results vary.
Who should avoid it
Talk to us first if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, have a skin infection, sunburn or fragile skin, or are pregnant. It is not performed over broken skin.
Insurance and cost
Coverage for acupuncture, cupping and related care depends on your plan, so check your benefits booklet or ask your insurer before you book. Call or text 647-622-4114 and we will tell you what is currently available.
When to check with a professional first
Seek medical advice first if you have a recent injury, a fever, a blood clot or clotting disorder, are pregnant or are unsure whether the treatment is safe for you. Tell your practitioner about your medications, including blood thinners.
