If your back seems to complain more from November to March, you are not imagining it. Many people in Ontario notice more stiffness and aches in winter, and a few everyday reasons explain why.

Why winter can make back pain worse

  • Cold muscles tighten up, so the same movement feels stiffer than it does in July.
  • We move less when it is dark and icy, and long stretches of sitting weaken support around the spine.
  • Heavy coats, slippery sidewalks and cautious walking change our posture and stride.
  • Shovelling snow is a sudden, repetitive load that many backs are not conditioned for.

What you can do at home

Keep moving in short bursts. A five-minute walk or a few gentle stretches every hour does more than one long workout. Warm up before shovelling, push snow instead of lifting it where you can, and bend at the hips and knees rather than the waist.

When to get hands-on help

A Registered Massage Therapist can ease tight muscles around the spine and hips, and a chiropractor can assess joint movement and posture. If the pain is new, severe, or spreads down a leg, an assessment helps you understand what is going on before you decide on a plan. See our guide on who to see first for back pain.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for back pain to flare up in cold weather?

It is very common. Cold, reduced activity and sudden efforts like shovelling can all irritate a sensitive back. A flare is not always a sign of new damage, but see a professional if it does not settle within a few days.

Should I use heat or ice for winter back stiffness?

Many people find gentle heat soothing for muscle tightness, while ice is sometimes used in the first day or two after a strain. If you are unsure, ask your practitioner what suits your situation.
