- Clinic in Scarborough, Ontario
Ayurveda in Ontario is an unregulated, traditional system of care that includes consultations, warm-oil therapies such as Abhyanga and Shirodhara, and the Panchakarma programme. It is generally not covered by insurance, and you should choose a clinic by asking about training, safety and herbal-product quality. Aara Holistic Wellness Clinic offers Ayurveda in Scarborough, Ontario.
What Ayurveda is
Ayurveda is a traditional health system from India, with a long history in Kerala and across South Asia. Rather than treating one symptom in isolation, it looks at digestion, sleep, stress, routine and your individual constitution (dosha). In an Ontario clinic it usually means a consultation, warm-oil therapies, diet and routine guidance, and sometimes a Panchakarma programme. See understanding your dosha.
Common Ayurvedic treatments you can find in Ontario
- Abhyanga: warm herbal-oil massage, often called Kerala oil massage. See what to expect from a Kerala-style Ayurvedic massage.
- Shirodhara: a steady stream of warm oil over the forehead for a calm, quiet mind.
- Kati Basti and Janu Basti: warm oil held over the lower back or knees.
- Swedanam and herbal poultice (Podly): herbal steam and warm herbal compresses.
- Panchakarma: a staged programme of preparation, cleansing measures and recovery, individualized after a consultation.
Is Ayurveda regulated in Ontario?
Massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists and acupuncturists each have a regulatory college in Ontario. Ayurvedic practice, as far as we are aware, does not, so there is no public register or protected title. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it means the checking is up to you. Read Ayurveda in Ontario: safety and questions to ask and how to check a practitioner is registered.
Is Ayurveda safe?
Warm-oil and external therapies are generally low-risk with a trained practitioner. The main concerns are herbal and mineral products with poor quality control (Health Canada has warned about some Ayurvedic products containing heavy metals), internal cleansing procedures that are not suitable for everyone, and delaying medical care. If a herbal product is recommended, ask whether it has a Health Canada authorization number. See is Panchakarma safe and who should wait.
What does the research say?
Research on Ayurveda is limited and often low quality, and results are mixed. Ayurveda is best seen as a traditional approach to rest, routine and relaxation that you can use alongside, not instead of, medical care. Be cautious of anyone who promises to cure a serious disease.
Does insurance cover Ayurveda in Ontario?
Generally no. Ayurveda is a traditional wellness service and is not typically insurance-eligible. If you want insurance-eligible care, Registered Massage Therapy is covered by many extended health plans. Our guide to Ayurvedic massage costs in Ontario explains what drives the price.
How to choose an Ayurvedic clinic in Ontario
- Ask who will treat you and what their Ayurvedic training is.

- Ask which therapies are external and which are internal, and who should not have them.
- If herbs are involved, ask about the Health Canada authorization number.
- Ask how treatment fits with your doctor's advice and medications.
- Be wary of guaranteed cures or pressure to prepay a large block of sessions.
